      Chapter 31
      Wild In The West
      --Nineteenth installment

Audrey crashed at my place, so she was on the couch when I leapt out of bed shouting. I didn’t even think twice as I started to grab my sweats to go run.

“Red,” she said, “what the hell are you doing? It’s four AM!”

“Just going for a run…” I clipped my fanny-pack around my waist.

“Ok, hang on a minute, I’m going with you…”

I paced the room while she changed into a spare set of sweats from my drawer. She looked a bit funny in the baggy fleece material, nothing like the formfitting Spandex fashion running suits she normally wore. She had been wearing an elastic “belly band” with her off duty gun earlier, and she now nestled it under the sweatshirt and gave me a wink.

We started out slowly, a warm up before the serious running. “I’m surprised you can still do this…” she commented.

“Do what, run? My belly is mostly all healed…”

“I meant the smoking… I’d have thought you would be hacking up a lung by the end of it!”

I shook my head, I really only wanted to lose myself, not examine my bad habits. I turned up the pace, hoping the extra effort would shut her up a little.

“So, the girl in the bar… You gonna call her?”

“What?”

“Louise, or whatever. The chick with the great tits… You gonna call her”

“Why, you jealous?” I brought the pace up a bit more.

“Just wondering… maybe it was a mistake…”

“What’s a mistake?”

“Too soon, I took you there and it was too soon.”

“Yeah…” I stepped it up a lot now, not wanting to remember the awful feeling of betrayal. I hated that I had felt so good for a moment there. I wasn’t supposed to feel good, maybe not ever again. Hell, even Audrey wasn’t putting moves on me!

I knew in my heart that she was holding back out of respect, and I loved her for that, but I also wanted to hear the same old desire in her voice.

“Your belly hurt yet…?” She was still matching me stride for stride.

“Little, but I ignore it…”

“How far we going…?’

“Dunno…” I was nearly at a sprint now, pushing myself too hard, I knew. I could see the shop that marked out two miles and decided to make the turn around here. Audrey showed no signs of slowing.

“You can fuck her if you want…”

“Fuck who?” I was a bit annoyed. She wasn’t supposed to be so chatty on my run!

“Miss island of nice tits, from the bar!”

“I have your permission?” I asked sarcastically.

“It would be totally wrong for you right now, but if you call her, she’ll do you…”

“So I don’t have your permission…”

“Just saying… You can have any guy or girl you want… I just think you should cool it for now…” She was finally starting to sound a bit winded.

I saw the lamppost that marked 200 yards to my place. As we passed it I broke into an all out sprint, nothing held back. It took a second for her to realize what I was doing but she also burst forward and we raced the rest of the way. She pumped her legs and pushed past me slightly. I turned on the kick and got back out front, but she matched me and we were neck and neck.

Finally, with only 15 yards to go she blew past me and reached the “finish line” a good five feet in front of me. She slowed and began to walk it off as I caught up and did the same. Sweat steamed off us in the cool salty predawn air. I hurt, deep inside, and my lungs felt like they might explode.

She was breathing pretty hard too, bending forward with her hands on her knees. I gazed at her, incredulous. “Just how the hell did you do that?!” I asked.

“Do what…? Oh, you mean beat you at your own game?” She chuckled hoarsely, coughing a little. “I run at the academy couple times a week when I’m not entertaining guests! Oh, and I don’t smoke!” She put her hand on the security gate. “You gonna open this? I need a shower…”

I unlocked it and we climbed the stairs. She walked straight to the bathroom and turned on the shower, peeling off the borrowed sweats as she went. I stopped, watching her body as she shed the covering. I had never really looked before, either too shy or too involved with someone else to see her.

She was strong and athletic, but no Barbie doll. Her legs were thick, but not fat. Her torso was solid as a boxer’s, smooth and thick across, but not at all flabby. I tried to get a good look at her breasts, but she disappeared into the bathroom before I could.

I walked in as she closed the shower curtain around the freestanding tub/shower. “Audrey?” I asked sheepishly.

“Yeah Baby?”

“How come you never… I mean, why is it…”

She poked her head out with the curtain pulled closed below. “What’s wrong Honey?”

“Do you still want me?” I pouted.

She looked at me with those dark, Greek eyes. Her lips parted just slightly. “If it were any other time,” she began, “I would be all over your sweet ass!” Her tongue touched her lips slightly, but she pulled it back. “I love you too much to do that right now, and you know it…” She winked and went back to the hot water.

“I’ll put on some water for tea…” I said as I walked to the kitchen.
